HEY! WANNA GO RENT A MOVIE?

GOOD OLE DAYS

It seems almost fitting that a book about video stores and the home video boom of the 80's and 90's is presented by two former video store clerks, Kevin Doherty and Bill Hrenchuk, who reside in the same city that the very first video store in Canada had its beginnings.

The opening of Video Concepts in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 19, 1979, set the precedent for a  video revolution that would take the nation by storm over the next two decades.

The Good Ole Days of Video Rental recalls those days and what the period was like from the industry’s start to its bitter end as told by customers who frequented video stores, clerks who worked at them, and owners/managers who operated them.

The book chronicles the entrepreneurial ventures of some locals who helped shape the scene where it all began in Winnipeg, where the VSDA was founded and where Winnipeg businessman Ron Safnick helped launch Media Home Entertainment, one of the biggest home video distributors of its time.

With anecdotal contributions from former video clerks and customers both above and below the 49th parallel, The Good Ole Days of Video Rental will appeal to both those who lived through the video rental era and the younger generation who knew nothing about it.

“We never stopped to consider that video

  stores might disappear one day…”

 - Albert Muller, Daily Grindhouse
